About Us
The Red Barn is a bach. And 'bach' is a New Zealand term for the treasured family holiday home near the beach or in the bush. Except these days, the good old kiwi bach is slowly being replaced by brick and tile modern mansions that hug the coastlines and resemble the very suburban sprawl that come weekend or summer holiday we seek to escape from.
With the Red Barn, we've endeavored to put the word 'bach' back into bach! Three years ago we built a barn, in the traditional New Zealand round hay-barn style, and filled it with timber! Macracarpa timber floors, solid timber bench tops and quirky, rustic tables and chairs. In other words, our bach has real character and charm.
And what gives the Red Barn it's most spectacular character is the setting. Built snugly amongst heritage grade bush, full of bird life. A very short walk and you'll stand in the shadow of a six hundred year Rimu. The bush around the Red Barn contains too many species to note here, but the most notable are the abundance of Nikau Palm, Rimu, huge Puriris, Kamahi, and towering Mamaku fern.
A ten year pest control program has resulted in the steady return of many species of native birds, particularly Tui with their enchanting chorus heard all day. Koreru are common and their aerial displays constantly amaze. My personal favourite though are the Kaka. Still rare, but their numbers are slowly increasing.
The property itself is six acres and is surrounded by bush reserves, privately owned bush blocks and Forest Parks. The Red Barn shares the property with the 'Green Cottage' which at the moment is permanently tenanted.
Location, location, location. The Red Barn is ideally suited to use as a base to explore the Coromandel and greater Bay of Plenty regions. Only a 15 minute drive and you're on the white sands and surf of Waihi beach. The following is a list of destinations and their approximate distances:
• Waihi Beach 25 km's
• Tauranga 30 km's
• Mt Maunganui 36 km's
• Whangamata 72 km's
• Rotorua 89 km's
• Hot Water Beach 100 km's
• Hahei, Cathedral Cove 105 km's
We trust you'll enjoy your stay at the red Barn. Whilst there we invite you to read the comments from other guests and and would be delighted if you left some remarks of your own.
